Hooded Homespun Jacket

Size 32-Chest: 35.5

NOTE:
At most, 48, 50, 52 needles are required to knit the body of this garment; but the collar/hood needs 72, 74, 74 needles.

BACK:
1. Cast on 48, 50, 52 sts in WY, using open edge method and. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Knit 76, 76, 80 rows.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole.
4. Knit 30 more rows.
5. Back neck. Cast off center 14, 14, 16 sts. 17, 18, 18 sts each side. Knit 6 rows with WY.

FRONT:
Cardigan right side worked first.
1. Cast on 25, 26, 27 sts in WY, using open edge method. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Knit 76, 76, 80rows. COR.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at right end for armhole. Work 18 rows.
4. Shape neck. COR. Cast off center 5 sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge (left end) every row 3, 3, 4 times, until 17, 18, 18 sts remain. Knit 9, 9, 8 rows even.
5. Cut yarn, leaving a 42.0 ins end. Knit 6 rows WY. Remove sts from machine.
6. Left cardigan front. Work as for right side, reversing shapings.

BACK RIBBING:
1. With wrong side of work facing, hook first row onto 48, 50, 52 needles, knit 1 row. Thread every third st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP. Hang hem bar.
2. Knit 12 rows.
3. Convert to 2x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely.

FRONT RIBBINGS:
1. With wrong side of work facing, hook first row onto 25, 26, 27 needles knit 1 row. Thread every third st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP. Hang hem bar.
2. Knit 12 rows.
3. Convert to 2x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely. Sew fronts to back at shoulders with right sides together.

SLEEVES:
1. Hang armhole, between markers, on to 45 stitches. Hang Hem and k 6, 6, 10 rows.
2. Decrease 1 st at each end of this row, then every following 5th row 9, 9, 8 times.
3. Knit a further 6, 6, 9 rows even. COR.
4. Remove every third stitch to WY.
5. K10 rows.
6. Convert marked stitches to 2x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely.
7. Repeat for other sleeve.

SIMPLE HOOD:
1. Cast on 72, 74, 74 sts in. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Folded front band. Work even for 8 rows, with lace holes near the ends of row 2 for drawstring. To complete the band, graft the cast-on sts to the last row worked. Reset the row counter to 0.
3. Knit 5, 4 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 3rd row 7 times, until 58 sts remain. Knit a further 6, 4 rows even (total 30 rows), excluding front band. Cast off loosely.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Using closed edge method of casting on for rib cast on 7 sts, leaving every other needle in NWP. Knit 27.6, 27.6, 28.6 ins, converting to rib in stages as you go.
2. Check that this length is sufficient, when slightly stretched, to go up cardigan front, from bottom of front ribbing, to bottom of hood. Rib more if necessary.
3. Cast off. Sew button band to left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men.
4. Mark positions for 10 buttons, the first one 0.5 ins above the band bottom, the last one 0.5 ins below the band top. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3.0 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. Work buttonhole band as for button band, working buttonholes at the marked positions as follows:
Thread off center 1 st to a length of WY, leaving the empty needle(s) in WP with latch open each time. When converting to rib, pick up the dropped st(s) at each buttonhole.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band.
3. Sew buttonhole band to cardigan front, being careful to align buttonholes with buttons.

FINISHING:
1. Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Sew back seam(s) of hood. Sew bottom of hood to neckline, easing to fit. Thread a drawstring if required.
2. Sew in all loose ends.

NOTES:
If you want to add patch pockets, cast on 18 stitches with WY and K 6r. Switch to MC and K 20 rows. Mark every third stitch with WY, but do not remove from needles. K 10 rows. Latch up marked stitches to form a 2x1 rib. Do two pockets. Center them on the lower portion of either side front and sew down.
