Homespun Cardigan by Gina B. Ahrens with KNITWARE DESIGN (Version 2.02)

YARN DESCRIPTION:
Lion Brand Homespun - 5 skeins

GAUGE DATA:
Gauge (stocking st over 4 in = 10 cm): 10.0 sts by 18.0 rows.
On keyplate 4 with EON(Every Other Needle)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: (ins): ... with Moderate fit.
Chest: 36.3
Armhole: 16.9
Top Neck Opening: 6.3
Front Neck Width: 0.0
Front Neck Depth: 8.5
Body Length: 22.1
Sleeve Bottom: 7.9
Sleeve Length: 17.9

BACK:
1. Cast on 48 sts with EON in WY, using open edge method and keyplate 4. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Knit 50 rows.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole.
4. Knit 40 more rows. Total 90 rows.
5. Back neck. Cast off center 16 sts. 16 sts each side. Knit 6 rows with WY.

FRONT: Cardigan right side worked first.
1. Cast on 25 sts with EON in WY, using open edge method and keyplate 4. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Knit 50 rows. COR.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at right end for armhole. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (left end) next and every following 4th row 8 times more, until 16 sts remain. Knit 7 rows even. Total 90 rows.
5. Cut yarn, leaving a 38.0 ins end. Knit 6 rows WY. Remove sts from machine.
6. Left cardigan front. Work as for right side, reversing shapings.

BACK RIBBING:
1. With wrong side of work facing, hook first row onto 44 needles, (putting 2 sts onto 4 needles evenly spaced across the row, and 1 st on all other needles), and using keyplate 4 knit 1 row. Thread every other st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP. Hang hem bar.
2. Change to keyplate 4 and knit 14 rows.
3. Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely.

FRONT RIBBINGS:
1. With wrong side of work facing, hook first row onto 23 needles, (putting 2 sts onto 2 needles evenly spaced across the row, and 1 st on all other needles), and using keyplate 4 knit 1 row. Thread every other st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP. Hang hem bar.
2. Change to keyplate 4 and knit 14 rows.
3. Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely.

 

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 22 sts in WY, using open edge method and keyplate 4. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY.
2. Knit 8 rows even. COR
3. Inc 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 6th row 9 times to 42 sts (63 rows total).
4. Knit a further 9 rows even. Total 72 rows. COR.
5. Cast off loosely.

SLEEVE RIBBING:
1. With wrong side of work facing, hook first row onto 19 needles, (putting 2 sts onto 3 needles evenly spaced across the row, and 1 st on all other needles), and using keyplate 4 knit 1 row. Thread every other st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP. Hang hem bar.
2. Change to keyplate 4 and knit 12 rows.
3. Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool. Cast off loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Use backstitch to sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Using closed edge method of casting on for rib, and keyplate 4, cast on 7 sts, leaving every other needle in NWP. Knit 25.8 ins, converting to rib in stages as you go.
2. Check that this length is sufficient, when slightly stretched, to go up cardigan front, from bottom of front ribbing, to center of back of neck. Rib more if necessary.
3. Cast off. Sew button band to left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men.
4. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0.5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3.3 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. Work buttonhole band as for button band, working buttonholes at the marked positions as follows:
Thread off center 1 st to a length of WY, leaving the empty needle(s) in WP with latch open each time. When converting to rib, pick up the dropped st(s) at each buttonhole.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band.
3. Sew buttonhole band to cardigan front, being careful to align buttonholes with buttons.

COLLAR:
1. Cast on stitches around neckline, including the front band ribbing stitches, onto 77 needles. K 1 row and place every third stitch onto WY. K 4 more rows.
2. Latch up stitches on WY and K 1 row. Place one stitch, at carriage end, in Hold position each row until you have 17 needles on each side in hold.
You may need extra weights during the short rowing process.

3. Push needles back to FWP one at a time on carriage side only. When all needle are in working position knit 1 row.
4. Cast off onto 6 rows WY.

FINISHING:
1. Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Use backstitch to sew remaining seams.
2. Sew in all loose ends.
3. Sew collar stitches that are on WY to inside of neck edge.
