Tunic Style Summer Top by Gina B. Ahrens

Materials:
2 one pound cones of Peaches and Cream( I used the color fairy tales) or you could also use Wool-Ease

Gauge:
16st x 26 r = 4 inches

Keyplate:
dot 3

Measurements:
L-Finished Bust-48”, body Length-27”
XL-Finished Bust-49”, body length-28”
XXL-Finished bust- 50”, body length -29”

Back:
cast on 72, 88, 104 needles in WY....K 6 R.....Switch to MC and K 33 R.....At the carriage side of the next two rows increase 3 needles with and e-wrap increase.....K 52, 58, 65 R......Mark this row at each end for arm hole........K 72 R......Cast off center 26, 30, 34 stitches onto 6 rows of WY.....Then cast off each shoulder(23, 29, 35 stitches on each side) onto WY.......remove from machine and set aside....

Front:
Work as for back up to armhole markers K 30 R.....Remove center 20 stitches onto WY....Put LH needles into HP and working on right side decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every row 2, 3, 4 times...decrease 1 stitch every third row 1, 2, 3 times.....until 23, 29, 35 stitches remain......K 28 R even... Cut yarn end leaving a 2 foot length( for sewing shoulder seams later)....K 6 R WY but do not remove from machine(you may need to add some weights here when you go to work on the other side of the neckline).......repeat for LH side......

Back and Front Ribbing:
Rehang bottom edge of back onto 70, 86, 102 needles.... Remove WY.....K 1 R.....Mark every third stitch with WY or ravel cord but do not remove from needles......K 17 R........Drop and latch up marked stitches......Back stitch BO....Repeat for Front......

Side Vents:
Hang the side edge of the back from the ribbing edge to the bottom of the 3 stitch increase onto 33 needles....Make sure wrong side in facing you......Hang Hem and K 1 R.....Hook the first stitch of the 3 stitch increase onto the end stitch of the row you just knit........K 2 R.....Hook second stitch the same as the first.....K 2 R....hang the last stitch...K 2 R and bring up an edge stitch to hang here so that when you bind off you have a smooth and even transition from the side vent to the side seam.....Drop and latch up every third stitch.....back stitch BO.....It is best when you do these side vents to start with the tail end of your yarn at the seam end and do your last row with the carriage ending at the hem or ribbing end....This way when you BO both tail ends will be at the side seam end and easily hidden........

Neckline:
Place one side of back shoulders onto 26, 32, 38 needles with right side facing out at you.....Push back against bed of machine......Place corresponding front shoulder onto the same needles with wrong side facing you( right sides should be together)......Use claw weights to weight the knitting.......Thread the 2 foot length threw the carriage push the needles back until the loops from the back come out and over the loops of the front so you only have one loop on each needle.....K 1 row and then back stitch BO....remove from machine.....Place all stitches around neckline onto machine (do not miss any or you will have holes)....Push shoulder seam allowance towards the front to give the shoulder seam a smoother look.......* You may have to hang and rib the front neckline and then the back neckline in two separate steps and the stitch up the sides(it takes a lot of needles to hang this neckline).......Do not rehang other shoulder at this time......Push knitting back against carriage leaving needles in HP.......Hang weighted hem and push it back too...... pull out allot of MC yarn from your skein and lay it across the open needles..........Leave a generous length at the skein end.....Remove the guide wire from your carriage.....Push the needles back to FWP.......closing the MC yarn in the latches.....Push carriage across the knitting slowly to knit 1 R........remove every third stitch to WY and K 7 R.....Latch up stitches on WY and then back stitch bind off....Repeat shoulder procedure for the remaining open shoulder ...Do not rehang ribbing....This seam will be closed by hand later.......Alternatives: You could knit 14 rows of ribbing and then cast off onto WY or BO...Then fold over the ribbing to the inside of the sweater and sew down.....

Short Sleeves:
Bring forward 86 needles.....Hang edge of body between armhole markers onto these needles being sure to evenly space out extra stitches....hang hem..... Push knitting and hem back against bed of machine and K 1 row as for first row of neckline ribbing......Starting COR... dec 1 stitch on each side every 6 rows 6 times...Ending with row counter reading 42 rows....CO onto 6 rows of WY and remove from machine...Repeat for other sleeve...

Cuff:
Bring forward 65 needles and rehang sleeve edge carefully spacing out extra stitches evenly.....K1 row......Remove every third stitch to WY...K 10 rows......Latch up stitches on WY to form ribbing......Back stitch bind off.......

Finishing:
Sew side seam at neck edge.....Block sweater....Sew side seams and sew in all loose ends.....With cotton yarn you must wash it before you will have the finished sweater effect that you want....Note: It is helpful to weave in all your thread ends as you go along by weaving them over and under adjacent needles before knitting the next row.......
